She performed with the Jose Limon Dance Co. at Lincoln Center and later through the Julliard School of Dance. As an adolescent, she was a scholarship student at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center. Since 1991, Liz has focused on authentic club-style social dances originating in Latin America. She has been dancing Argentine tango for the past eleven years. While she has studied all forms of the dance, her love lies in the on-body, “apilado” or “milonguero-style” tango – the tango of the Golden Age and the tango of the crowded dance floors of Buenos Aires. In this style, she has studied extensively with Ricardo Vidort, Alicia Pons, Susana Miller, Osvaldo & Coca Cartery, Maria Plazaola, and Pedro Sanchez. Liz has had her own business teaching dance for the past twelve years in Santa Fe, New Mexico and now works full-time teaching milonguero-style Argentine tango both privately and in group classes. In addition, she teaches tango, nationally, in weekend workshops, including five Denver Tango Festivals, both on her own and with her partner Masami Hirokawa and with the late Ricardo Vidort, a renowned and deeply respected milonguero of the Golden Age. Liz has been hosting statewide milongas in Santa Fe since 2002. She currently hosts the Joe’s Diner milonga. Liz’s love of people, her technical ability in both leading and following, and her passion for the energetic and emotional elements of the dance have led her to develop effective ways of teaching not only the physical and functional aspects of the dance, but also the more elusive, transcendent qualities of the dance. Her exploratory form of teaching allows for a visceral experience of tango as a form of communication, creativity, profound connection, and the joy of self-expression. Liz holds an interdisciplinary Bachelor’s degree in art and psychology from Bennington College and a Master’s degree in clinical psychology with a specialty in body/mind integrative therapy from Antioch University. She gave up her career in body-psychotherapy in 1998 in order to devote herself to teaching dance full-time. Masami Hirokawa’s Bio Masami has been an artist his whole life. In his youth he studied ballet and tap dance as well as music and sports. In his twenties he was a nationally-ranked motorcycle racer and in his thirties he competed nationally in various ballroom dances. He has been a successful free-lance illustrator since 1971. Masami has danced milonguero-style Argentine tango for 7 years, 6 of which have been with his partner, Liz Haight. He has also studied with Alicia Pons, Ricardo Vidort, Susana Miller, Maria Plazaola, and Osvaldo & Coca Cartery, 2004 world champions. Masami comes to tango with a deep understanding of the creative process and a natural, delightful ability to interpret music. He is an intuitive dancer, responsive to his partner, to the music and to his own experience as it unfolds. In his words, “Argentine tango is like working on a piece of art except, in the case of tango, we are each other’s canvas”. Masami has been assisting Liz Haight teaching Argentine tango for the past 2 years. In his work with Liz, he is an integral part of developing both subject matter and experiential methods of teaching. Masami teaches private classes and assists Liz in all their classes in Santa Fe and in workshops. Masami DJs at their Joe’s Diner milonga in Santa Fe. Plans for a new studio

I have been painting at my studio in Boulder, Colorado for over 10 years. During this coming year I will be moving my studio to Salida, Colorado. Salida is 3 hours southwest of Boulder, in a beautiful valley surrounded by snowcapped mountains. It is famous for it’s small town charm, vibrant artist community, river sports, hiking and skiing. We have bought a 3000 square foot building just outside of the city in Smelter Town. The front half of the building was built in the early 1900s as a Slovakian club house, and has a hard wood dance floor. In the 50s the other half was built. We have gutted the building except for the dance floor. By next Spring we will have a tango dance studio, art studio and gallery in the front and a home in the back. We have named this dream-come-true ‘Casa Tango’. Our spacious studio has 12 foot ceilings, and will be wonderful for my painting and gallery space. It will also welcome the beginnings of a tango community in the Salida area. We will start beginners’ tango classes next year. We foresee tango weekends when we bring in some of the wonderful international tango teachers, and host milongas for our tango friends from all over the world. I hope that you will visit us there next year. If you wish to be on our mailing list to keep up with the progress. Please email me at dvora@tangoartist.com. Tango Calligraphy

I sit watching others dance. I draw without looking at my pen and paper. My hand traces the dancers as they glide and turn in the passionate path of tango. TANGO CALLIGRAPHY is born. This becomes my vocabulary for painting tango. |
